'The future of image sensing – More intelligence or more sensing?'
Peter Seitz studied physics and did his Master in solid-state/semiconductor physics at ETH Zurich. His Ph.D. thesis at ETH was on 2D and 3D X-ray imaging and computed tomography. He subsequently worked for RCA, General Electric, the Paul Scherrer Institute, CSEM, ETH, EPFL and the University of Neuchatel. Today, Peter Seitz is Senior Technologist at Hamamatsu Photonics Europe, he is Adjunct Professor of optoelectronics at EPFL and he is a startup coach at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab of ETH. He is also active as a member of the Executive Committees of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW and of the European Technology Platform Photonics21. Peter Seitz has authored and co-authored about 200 publications in the fields of applied optics, semiconductor image sensing, machine vision, optical metrology and in the MedTech domain. He holds more than 60 patents, and he has won 25 national and international awards together with his teams.
Prof. Dr. Christian Wolf, INSA Lyon, France'Learning high-level reasoning in and from Images'
Christian Wolf is associate professor (Maître de Conférences, HDR) at INSA de Lyon and LIRIS, a CNRS laboratory, since sept. 2005. He is interested in machine learning and computer vision, especially the visual analysis of complex scenes in motion. His work puts an emphasis on modelling complex interactions of a large amount of variables: deep learning, structured models, and graphical models. Since September 2017 he is partially on leave at the chroma work group and the CITI Laboratory, where he is interested in the connections between machine learning and control.
He received his MSc in computer science from TU Vienna, Austria, in 2000, and a PhD in computer science from INSA de Lyon, France, in 2003. In 2012 he obtained the habilitation diploma, also from INSA de Lyon. He is currently the national project coordinator of ANR/NSERC project Deepvision “Learning highly complex visual problems with deep structured models” (9/2016-3/2020); he has coordinated the INSA-Lyon partner of ANR Canada (2007-2010) and PIA Interabot (2012-2016). He is member of the scientific committee of GDR IA and member of the directing committee of GDR ISIS and co-leader of the topic "Machine Learning". He has supervised 10 defended PhD theses.
Dr. François Simoens, CTO office, CEA-Leti, Grenoble, France'The convergence of photonics and electronics: an opportunity for machine vision'
François Simoen carried out seven years of research in the accelerator field at CEA Saclay, before joining CEA-Leti in Grenoble in 2003 with the position of program manager and expert in infrared and THz sensors. From 2015 to 2018, he has been the Marketing and Strategy Manager for the imaging technologies and systems developed at Leti from X-ray to Far-Infrared. Since 2019 he acts as the Director of the LETI strategic program named ‘miniaturized LIDAR – CPS’.
